Another victorious night for Harry Potter and The Cursed Child

Following on the back of its recent success at the Critics Circle Theatre Awards, Harry Potter and The Cursed Child, which features Winterson’s actress, Chipo Kureya, won an amazing 8 awards at the WhatsOnStage celebration on Sunday. The haul sets a new record for total number of award wins by a play in a single WhatOnStage ceremony.

The awards list included: best actor (Jamie Parker), best new play, best director (John Tiffany), best supporting actor (Anthony Boyle), best supporting actress (Noma Dumezweni), and there were prizes also for set design, lighting and video design.

Negative voices had previously shown resistance online to the casting of Noma Dumezweni, a black actress, in the role of Hermione, making her win particularly impactful. While John Tiffany, who won best actor, saw off competition from industry veterans like Sir Ian McKellen, Kenneth Branagh, and Ralph Fiennes.

Winterson’s actress, Chipo Kureya, speaking previously in response to the earlier Critics Circle Theatre Awards has recently said of the play: “It’s a huge honour to be involved in such a successful and sought out show.” We once again congratulate Chipo and the entire Cursed Child team on a hugely successful show that is very quickly making its way into West End folklore!
