LIFE

In a house in Manchester divided into four flats, we are introduced to four interweaving stories about love, parenthood, loss and self-discovery.

Gail (Alison Steadman) bumps into an old friend who makes a startling observation about Gail’s marriage to Henry (Peter Davison).

The ordered life of Belle (Victoria Hamilton, reprising her role from Doctor Foster) is thrown into disarray by the hospitalisation of sister Ruth (Susannah Fielding), and the subsequent arrival of wayward niece Maya (Erin Kellyman).

David (Adrian Lester) goes on holiday without his wife Kelly (Rachael Stirling) and has his head turned unexpectedly by Saira (Saira Choudhry). And heavily pregnant Hannah (Melissa Johns), recently coupled up with Liam (Joshua James), is surprised by her connection with Andy (Calvin Demba), the father of her unborn child, who has been away travelling for the duration of the pregnancy.

These disruptive arrivals turn each person’s life upside down, setting off a chain of events which we will follow across the series.

We managed to speak to Melissa briefly in-between her interviews about the show;

What was the audition process like for this role?

The audition process for my character – Hannah in LIFE was 2 self-tapes and one in person audition at the end. My first self-tape was an improvised scene! I was given a few facts to work with but improvised the rest! That allowed me to give Hannah a personal flavour from the start.

Reminder – ALWAYS KEEP WORKING ON YOUR IMPRO SKILLS!

How did you develop the character for this role?

Hannah surprised me throughout the 4 months of filming. She took turns that allowed me to delve into her life further and read between Mike’s lines! Character development on a Mike Bartlett script is heaven!

What have you enjoyed most about working on LIFE?

The best thing about working LIFE was having the honour of portraying the incredible, relatable storylines alongside some of the UK’s most amazing actors. I was a lucky and very thankful girl.

Will you be watching tonight / who with?

Tonight I’ll be watching LIFE with my very close family (less than 6!)

Life begins on BBC One on Tuesday, September 29 at 9pm.

It will also be available on BBC iPlayer at the same time.
