Rave reviews for RSC’s Hamlet featuring Patrick Elue
The Royal Shakespeare Company’s latest production of Hamlet came into London last night to a raft of positive press reviews. Featuring Winterson’s actor Patrick Elue, the show hoasts a wealth of fresh talent, and can be seen on stage at the Hackney Empire until the end of March.
“Arguably London’s prettiest theatre, Hackney Empire only tends to pull in the crowds at panto season. But this touring production from the RSC is well worth a trip: it fills every gorgeous corner of the building with a bright, expansive take on Shakespeare’s Hamlet.”
★★★★ – Time Out
“It is pleasing to watch the august Royal Shakespeare Company move away from its Stratford upon Avon/ Barbican strongholds and strike out. This is exactly the right production to take into the wider world, a vibrant vision of Elsinore as a modern-dress African country anchored by a towering titular performance.”
★★★★ – Evening Standard
“The director tops the production with a throbbing sound design by Christopher Shutt. He accompanies the show with diegetic drums, actively giving a rhythm to it and making the energy rise in the room. The pulsating tattoo created by the musicians stresses the pivotal moments in the plot and creates a peculiar and grounding atmosphere.”
★★★★★ – Broadway World
“Godwin’s Hamlet is brilliant in every way, a thoroughly moving piece of theatre”
